The ad budget formula

Ad budget = conversions you want ÷ conversion rate × cost per click

Example: You want 50 sales a month, 2.5% of clicks buy, and a click costs $1.20: 50 ÷ 2.5% = 2,000 clicks, and 2,000 × $1.20 = $2,400 a month, about $79 a day. Each sale costs $1.20 ÷ 2.5% = $48.

How to work out an ad budget

An ad budget built from a goal starts with what you want, works back through how many clicks that takes, and prices the clicks. It shows straight away whether the goal is affordable: if each sale costs more than it earns you, more budget only loses more money.

The daily budget divides the month by 30.4 days, the average month, which is how Google Ads and Meta spread a monthly amount.

Typical costs and budgets

Your own CPC and conversion rate are the best inputs. If you are starting out, these 2026 figures show where search and Meta ads usually land, and how much of their revenue large companies spend on marketing as a whole.

How to get more from the same budget

  • Start small, measure your real CPC and conversion rate for a few weeks, then size the budget from those numbers.
  • Spend where conversions cost least, and check that those customers are worth as much as the others.
  • Raise the conversion rate of the landing page: doubling it halves the budget a goal needs.
  • Leave room for learning. New campaigns usually cost more per conversion in their first weeks.

What this budget leaves out

  • Costs don't scale in a straight line. Past a point, more budget reaches less likely buyers and the cost per conversion rises.
  • The budget covers ads only. Creative, tools and agency fees come on top.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate an ad budget?

Divide the conversions you want by your conversion rate to get the clicks needed, then multiply by your cost per click. 50 ÷ 2.5% = 2,000 clicks × $1.20 = $2,400 a month.

How much should I spend on Google Ads?

Enough to reach your goal at a cost per conversion you can afford. Work out the clicks your goal needs and multiply by the CPC Google Keyword Planner shows for your keywords.

How do I turn a monthly budget into a daily budget?

Divide by 30.4, the average number of days in a month. $2,400 a month is about $79 a day.

What if the budget is more than I can spend?

Lower the goal, raise the conversion rate, or find cheaper clicks. Check that the cost per conversion is below what a customer is worth before adding budget.
